The current focus of our #WorkRight campaign is dust.
Our inspectors are visiting food manufacturing, woodworking and construction businesses to see how well they’re protecting workers from exposure to this harmful substance. They will be looking for evidence of workers knowing the risks, planning their work and using the right controls to keep dust down.
Each year, there are 12,000 lung disease deaths, 2,595 mesothelioma deaths with a similar number of lung cancer deaths, linked to past exposure of harmful substances breathed in at work.
We want to raise awareness of just how dangerous dust inhalation can be. Workers in each of these industries should understand the risks associated with carrying out tasks that create a lot of dust, should know to plan the job from start to finish and use the right controls to protect their lungs. Employers have a legal duty to protect their workers, so everyone can go home healthy.
If you’re one of our partners, a business or worker who wants to get involved with our campaign and show your support, then download our free #Dustbuster selfie cards. Please print them out, take a photo with them and then share your snaps with us on social media via the #WorkRight and #Dustbuster hashtags. We will share our favourites so keep an eye on our social channels.
Our inspectors will be capturing best and worst practice so keep an eye on Twitter at @H_S_E, Facebook @SaferSites and LinkedIn at: www.linkedin.com/company/health-and-safety-executive to see what we’re finding. You can also join the conversation at #WorkRight.
